Heaven Can't Wait (I-Team #1.5) by Pamela Clare

Blurb...

Lissy Charteris and Will Fraser are two weeks away from getting married when Lissy suggests they put a bit of traditional romance into their lives by giving up sex until their wedding night. Though Will thinks it’s a crazy idea, he’s not about to admit he can’t do it. The two end up making a bet, vowing not to be the first to ask for sex. But what starts as a bet turns into a game of no-holds-barred seduction—winner take all.

Heaven Can’t Wait is only about 90 pages, but leave it to Pamela Clare to give us wonderful characters and a fun, sexy story that easily rivals some full length novels I’ve read. This story takes place between Extreme Exposure and Unlawful Contact, but I read it out of order and had no problem whatsoever. I'm giving this 5 stars because, in my opinion, unlike many short stories, this one didn't feel lacking in any way... other than I wish it were longer because it was so good.

Will Fraser and Lissie Charteris are two weeks away from their wedding day and everything is wonderful. They’re madly in love and their sex life is sizzling hot. They’ve begun moving their things into the home they’ll share when they return from their honeymoon and everything, everything seems perfect. Until Lissie gets a phone call from her relationship jaded mother who begins filling her head with doubts about whether she and Will are really in love, or if they’re merely in lust. Suddenly worried that they are doomed to end up unhappy like her parents did, Lissie suggests to Will—under the guise of experiencing an old fashioned romance—that the abstain from sex until after they are married, which leads to some funny, frustrating and incredibly hot scenes and kept the story interesting and moving at a fast pace.

Keep in mind, Heaven Can't Wait is not a romantic suspense as is the rest of the I-Team series. This is just a glimpse into Will Fraser's happily ever after and a feel good read. I truly love Pamela Clare’s full length novels and the way she gives us characters who are real, whose actions, reactions and emotions are convincing. She gives us stories and people that we can relate to, and this short story is no different. If you’re a fan of her I-Team series, I’d really encourage you to pick up Heaven Can’t Wait, available in ebook format or in an out of print anthology called Catch of the Day, and enjoy Will and Lissie’s sweet, touching and sexy story.

Soul Deep (I-Team 6.5) by Pamela Clare

Soul Deep is a deeply romantic and incredibly sexy story. It was refreshing to read about Jack and Janet, a mature man and woman who don't play games, who know what they want, and do what they have to, to get it.

Blurb:

Rancher Jack West knows what it means to love a woman with all his heart and to lose her far too soon. A widower for seven long years, he thinks love and romance are a thing of the past, nothing more than cherished memories. He devotes himself to his grown son and his family, the horses they raise, and the land that has been theirs for three generations. He doesn’t know that life has a surprise in store for him in the form of Janet Killeen, the lovely FBI agent he threw off his land last winter.

The bullet that left Janet Killeen seriously wounded also tore a hole through her life. All she wants is a little peace and quiet in the mountains, a chance to feel like herself again. That chance comes to an abrupt end when she goes off the road in a snowstorm and winds up stranded alone in a ditch. The last person on earth she wants to see is that arrogant jerk Jack West, no matter how handsome he is. But from the moment Jack finds her and offers her his hand, she realizes there’s far more to this gruff cowboy than she had imagined.

But trouble is brewing at Cimarron Ranch. A deranged man with an inscrutable motive is moving in for the kill, threatening to end Jack and Janet’s romance before they can claim a love that is … Soul Deep.

*****
Just a note: This novella is part of the I-Team series (I-Team After Hours) but works perfectly as a standalone.

Seduction Game (I-Team #7) by Pamela Clare

Blurb...

CIA officer Nick Andris wants revenge. His last mission failed after a Georgian arms smuggler killed his lover. He’s been tailing a woman for three weeks hoping she will lead him to his target. But there’s a problem with the intel. Holly Elise Bradshaw is nothing more than an entertainment writer with a love for sex and designer clothes. Clearly someone at Langley made a mistake . . .

When Holly finds herself in trouble, the only weapons at her disposal are her brains and her body. But they won’t be enough to handle the man who’s following her. He’s going to turn her world upside-down.

My thoughts...

My favorite stories are those with heroes and heroines whose bravery and intelligence and capacity to love know no bounds, and such is the case with Holly and Nick in Pamela Clare’s 7th installment of the I-Team series, Seduction Game. I know there will be some who might be surprised that Holly Bradshaw fits this description, but trust me on this – forget everything you thought you knew about her and prepare to be blown away!

I’ll be honest with you, when I heard that Holly was getting her own story my first thought was “why?”, because in the earlier books she was always a background – I mean, sure, she was there as a great friend, but to me she always felt like...filler. But within minutes of that wayward thought I’d come to my senses and knew she’d be great for the simple reason that Pamela Clare doesn’t write empty characters. Even her supporting casts are made up of people we either love or hate, so well developed are they. So I knew, I knew that Holly would turn out to be a woman with incredible depth and I was not wrong.

The bottom line…

This is a fast paced, exciting, burn up the pages story, and offers further proof (though no further proof is needed) of Pamela Clare’s amazing writing talent. Despite the hell she’s lived through these past couple of years, she gave us Holly, who along with Nick and the rest of the I-Team, made Seduction Game one of my favorite romantic suspense reads of 2015!

Skin Deep (I-Team 5.5) Written by Pamela Clare, Narrated by Kaleo Griffith

This is a review of the audio book

I’m going to start by saying; I’m in love with Kaleo Griffith’s voice. No, let me rephrase that; I’m in lust with his voice. In fact, it took me much longer than it should have to finish listening to this story because there were certain sentences, certain… uh… “things” he said that had me scrolling (is that the right word for rewinding an audio book?) back to listen to them again and again. There were times I’d adjust my ear-buds, nearly to the point of pain, just to make sure no one else could hear these “things,” and when my husband said I was looking a bit flushed and asked if I was feeling okay, I replied with, “Just a hot-flash, hon.” Not exactly a lie, that, but never thought I’d be so thankful to have the “menopausal” excuse to fall back on!

I wonder if he'd be willing to make a recording replacing Megan's name with mine...

Thank you, Dorsey aka Wrath Lover, for putting a name to what I'm feeling:

Okay, now that I’ve thoroughly embarrassed myself…

Granted, I’m not a hardcore audio book aficionado, but I know what I like, and I was very impressed with Mr. Griffith’s ability to give such distinct voices to the characters, men and women alike. And having read this e-book many times, I had formed pretty definitive personality attributes to all the characters, and Mr. Griffith nailed them, each and every one. I’m looking forward to listening to more stories told through Kaleo Griffith’s voice.

And now I’ll leave you with my original review of the ebook version:

Megan Hunter, Marc Hunter's baby sister, has been working hard to put her life back together after the horrific ordeal she went through years ago, and just as things are falling into place, when things are finally looking up, she gets a very unwelcome, very dangerous visitor from her past.

Nate West, a local rancher, has just delivered several cases of beef to a community shelter and as he's leaving he spots Megan, that sweet, beautiful woman he's noticed volunteering at the shelter... and she's in trouble! Being the kind of man he is, Nate steps in to kick ass and it turns out to be one of the best decisions he's ever made.

Wow, I really enjoyed this short story! Megan is all grown up, taking care of herself, moving on and not allowing herself to remain a victim. She has such strength, such compassion... I simply adore the woman she has become!

And Nate. *sigh* Nate West, a new character to the series, is all kinds of wonderful. A strong, hard working, honorable man... Nate is everything I love in a hero. He brings with him some emotional and physical scars, and this makes him all the more appealing. Apart they are wonderful, but when Nate and Megan come together they are perfect! And seeing sweet, adorable little Emily, Megan's daughter, was such a treat!

Skin Deep is a sweet, sexy story that gives our Megan the happily ever after she is so deserving of and adds another hot, alpha male to the cast of I-Team heroes!!

Bonus story! And if that's not enough, the extra little story at the end, Marc & Julian Make a Beer Run, is laugh out loud funny and an awesome revisit with my favorite team of RS heroes!!!

Naked Edge (I-Team #4) by Pamela Clare

Another 5+ Star read from Pamela Clare!

There are just some authors who know their stuff, and Pamela Clare is one of them. Honestly, her stories never cease to amaze me! They are action packed and believable, addressing topics close to home that we only hear or read little bits about in the news.  Regardless of the subject matter, I love how she imparts information, giving us more insight into what the characters are dealing with while keeping us fully engrossed in the story and invested in them as people. And how she always does this without bogging the story down in lectur-esque details is beyond me, but one thing all of her stories have in common is that much of what she writes about she’s experienced firsthand. There’s no guessing, no filling in details and hoping she got it right – her books comes straight from the pages of her life, and you can feel it in the characters, in their words and actions, in the way they live their lives – because Ms. Clare has lived it also.

And, Sweet Mary! Does this woman know how to write alpha males!  They are the perfect combination of rugged, honorable, sexy, determined, intelligent, sexy, and devoted to their causes and to those they love. And wow, have I mentioned sexy?!? The heroines are people you can relate to, believe in and even though I’d rather have the heroes – any one of them – for myself, I’m wanting to see the females get their happily ever after so badly, that I’m willing to share! Yes, yes… so very selfless of me, but that’s just the kind of person I am.

So let’s talk about Naked Edge:

Katherine James is a Navajo environmental journalist on the I-Team, the Denver Independent newspapers's elite group of investigative reporters. Her background in Native American traditions, beliefs and ways of life give her a unique perspective when covering stories relating to the people. Kat has a very deep love and respect for the earth, and enjoys spending time at Mesa Butte with her friends, but one afternoon while sitting and enjoying the scenery alone, she hears a loud crack and feels the ground give way beneath her. Unable to find anything to grab hold of, she finds herself at the mercy of a rockslide. As darkness envelopes her, Kat’s last thoughts are, 'I don’t want to die today.' Lucky for her, it wasn’t her time to go.

Gabe Rossiter, Boulder Mountain Park Ranger, was enjoying his day off, getting in some rock climbing, when he hears a woman scream, glances over in time to see rocks sliding down the side of a slope and caught sight of the woman falling with them.  Moving quickly, he made his way to where he knew the rocks would have come to a standstill and looked for the woman he was positive he had seen. Finding only her backpack, he was certain she was dead, having been buried under the debris. Only when he hears her cry out in pain does he realize that she’s managed to crawl away from the rock slide, despite her broken leg, and was making her way toward the trail in search of help. Doing what he could to stabilize her and calm her down, Gabe calls in their position and a rescue team gets there in no time, whisking Kat away from the accident and the man who saved her life.

A few months later, Gabe and Kat are brought together again in another unfortunate event when a sacred religious ceremony Kat is attending is violently disrupted by law enforcement personnel. Gabe arrives just in time to see Kat being dragged by the hair from the sweat lodge where the inipi ceremony was taking place, by an overzealous, with an exaggerated view of his own self importance – who, having no jurisdiction, shouldn’t have been there in the first place. One thing leads to another, reports are filed, threats are made, and Kat and Gabe find themselves in a fight for their lives.

The sexual tension in this book is through the roof! Gabe is carrying tons of baggage from his previous relationship with his fiancĂ©e who died three years earlier. Now, he’s all about sex, getting off, a real f*ck ‘em and leave ‘em style Don Juan. No more relationships for him – love doesn’t really exist. The only thing there might be between a man and a woman is sexual chemistry, nothing more. Kat, on the other hand, does believe in true love, and won’t give herself sexually to any man. She’s holding out for her true “half-side,” the one man who will complete her – much to Gabe’s dismay.  But as I said, the sexual tension is high and the non-sex sex scenes are some of the hottest I’ve ever read. Wow… have a cold drink and a fan nearby – I’m just sayin’…

Kat is very different from any other female lead I’ve ever read. She has this amazing ability to love unconditionally, and such a calm, gentle spirit, that while I admired her, I wasn’t sure I could come to believe in her as a heroine who would be able to hold her own. I should have known better than to doubt. While she might come across and meek and mild, when the chips were down it was her quiet confidence, her inner strength, and her faith that kept her going. As the story is reaching its suspenseful climax, Kat has fought with everything she has in her to escape. When she realizes that struggling anymore at this particular moment won’t do her any good and that she needs to save her strength for when the opportunity arises and she really can fight back, she becomes so focused. So calm.  She begins singing Native American songs from her childhood, and I loved that!!  Throughout the book we see how important her heritage is to her, and in a time when she most needed a calm strength, she had that to draw from. For Kat, in my opinion, this is what made the difference between life and death.

I’m not going to go into anymore of the story itself, but I just have to say that toward the end of the book while performing an act of absolute selflessness that had me sobbing so hard I had to put the book down to compose myself, Gabe went from being a hero I really liked, to one I not only love, but adore, one who has earned a spot on my Top Heroes shelf. While the stories and the players change, one thing is a given - Anytime I pick up one of Pamela Clare’s books, I know exactly what to expect – a fabulous read that will have me thinking about the characters and their lives long after I’ve finished the story.

As an aside - If you choose to read Naked Edge, and I truly hope you do, once you get past Kat’s accident  on Mesa Butte,  go to Ms. Clare’s website and read about how she came up with this part of the story. You’ll be amazed.  In fact, even if you choose not to read this book, at least read the author’s notes: http://www.pamelaclare.com/notes_nakededge.php

And now I’ll leave you with this parting word of caution—I’ve noticed a strange phenomenon attached to Pamela Clare’s books. Whenever I’m reading her stories, I find that my furniture gets dusty, trash piles up and I run out of clean clothes, so be prepared because this is likely to happen to you, too.

Unlawful Contact (I-Team #3) by Pamela Clare

While writing this review, I kept asking myself, how does Pamela Clare do it? How does she write book after amazing book, each one getting better than the one before? When I was sure she couldn’t possibly top Extreme Exposure, I read Hard Evidence and was blown away. Then, when I’m certain there’s no way she can beat Hard Evidence, I read Unlawful Contact and found myself literally sitting on the edge of my seat, unable to put it down, and staying up until the wee hours of the morning to finish it – yet not wanting it to end.
In one of the sweetest, sexiest prologues of any book I’ve ever read, Sophie Alton and Hunt spent one unforgettable night together, 12 years before this story begins, knowing it would probably be the last time they’d ever see each other. Hunt left the following morning to begin his stint in the Army and as the years wore on, Sophie went on to become an investigative reporter, ultimately ending up at the Denver Independent newspaper as a member of their elite I-Team. Even though they didn’t see each other again, didn’t stay in touch, they never forgot that one night they’d spent together, a night that was so much more than just physical attraction. What they had shared was true passion, an emotional connection between two lonely people that would never be forgotten.
As the book blurb tells us, our heroine, Sophie is investigating the disappearance of a young mother, Megan, who was recently paroled, and at a time when her life was finally taking a turn for the better, she inexplicably takes off with her daughter, Emily, and is running from the law. In her attempts to find Megan, Sophie is led to Marc Hunter, Megan’s brother, who is serving a life sentence for murdering a fellow DEA agent. But, as is often the case, things are not always as they appear and what once appeared to be a black and white, cut and dry conviction sentencing Marc Hunter to prison, now takes on shades of gray as we get a glimpse into a justice system tainted by a few corrupt and power hungry men. The story takes us on an exciting journey with Marc and Sophie who are chasing and being chased by the bad guys while trying to find out why Megan and Emily are on the run and reach them before it’s too late. There is plenty enough action, adventure, mystery, romance and sexual heat to keep this story moving quickly, yet easy to follow. I never lost interest and Unlawful Contact is yet another book by this author to be added to my “keepers” shelf.
I usually devote a good amount of time to character traits and development in my reviews, but I’m not going to do that this time, other than to say that once again these are not just names on the page rather, they are richly detailed and fully fleshed out people who we’d truly love to have as friends, neighbors, family members and lovers. Now, that said, Marc, I adore you and I want to have your babies. Yes, I had wanted to have Julian’s babies, too… but this time I mean it. You’re perfect for me. Tortured, hot, scarred, sexy, vulnerable, honorable, sexy – in short, you’re the perfect male, but you need a woman’s touch, my touch, so ditch that Sophie chick and come home with me. *sigh*
OK, where was I…? Oh, yes! So, I had asked the question, How does she do it? Well, the answer is that not only is Ms. Clare a bestselling author, she’s an investigative journalist and the “fictional” stories we read about in her books, aren’t quite as fictional as we might think. They are based on actual stories she broke or helped work on over the years at her “day” job working at the newspaper. This is where the realism and the attention to details that make her stories stand out come from—firsthand experience. And as I read these novels, I can tell that not only the characters, but their circumstances really matter to her. They don’t just start and end between the covers of the book. Here’s what I mean—
Ms. Clare, during her years as an investigative reporter, actually spent some time in a women’s jail to get a feel for what it was like behind bars. She became aware of the practice of shackling pregnant inmates to their beds during labor and childbirth and made it her personal mission to have a law passed which would put a halt to this practice. She spent three years trying to find a lawmaker who would take up the issue but no one seemed interested. In fact, some weren’t even aware this was being done. In January of 2010, she went to the Denver Women’s Correctional Facility to interview inmates who were either pregnant or who had recently given birth and the following month wrote up an article with new information and updated statistics.
Armed with the article and all the supporting data, she had a meeting with the Senate President who agreed to grant “late-bill” status to any bill dealing with this issue. Pamela then found a lawmaker who was willing to carry the bill. However, this lawmaker knew nothing about the issue, so she asked Ms. Clare to write the law, which she did, followed by weeks of hearings in the House and Senate in which she testified three times, with the bill finally passing in June, 2010  with only a single “no” vote.
Thanks to her efforts, pregnant women in Denver Correctional Facilities have been allowed a small bit of dignity in a very undignified existence. Some of the things which are covered in this bill are:
---No one in the state -- city police, county sheriffs, state prison authorities -- can shackle a pregnant inmate in labor or during birth.
---The new law also regulates how a pregnant inmate can be shackled throughout her pregnancy.
---And it makes sure she can have someone with her during her strip-search when she returns to prison (guards were hurting women).

My purpose in sharing this information is to point out how seriously Ms. Clare takes her job as a journalist and to show how much work and firsthand experience goes into her novels. Each book of this series is just as detailed and accurate, her information having come from hours upon hours of research and hands on investigation, which give a unique perspective and authenticity to her stories we don’t often find in fictional, romantic suspense novels.. They are not just words on a page meant to sell books, she truly believes in what she writes about and that comes through in her stories. She consistently gives us characters to care about, laugh with, cry for and look forward to revisiting time and time again.
If you’re a fan of romantic suspense and haven’t yet tried Pamela Clare’s I-Team novels, I’d really encourage you to do so, and just as I did, you might just find you have a new favorite author to the genre.

Hard Evidence (I-Team #2) by Pamela Clare

Hard Evidence is book 2 in the suspense filled I-Team series. This story focuses on one of the most horrific crimes imaginable – the buying and selling of human beings. It is something that I find so abhorrent, and how anyone can look into the face of an innocent child and think that it’s ok to force them into a life of prostitution or worse... is beyond my ability to comprehend. It takes a truly evil person to be capable of such atrocities, and I’ve no doubt that there’s a special place in hell just for men and women like the scum of the earth bad guy in this story.
It couldn't have been easy but Ms. Clare gives us a clear, albeit brief, glimpse into the lives of these victims - what they endure, how they are physically controlled, emotionally manipulated and ultimately disposed of when they are no longer useful, and at no time did the information seem too intense or too graphic. While this story is definitely entertaining, it was also quite an education. We are taken from something we just hear about in the news to something I felt like I was actually there for, watching through the eyes  of those working this case, and that’s why I connected with the victims on a more personal - one human being to another - level. They are not just stories, not just words in a book or on the front page of a newspaper. They are people.  Mothers, fathers, daughters, sons, sisters, brothers, friends, neighbors… they are people who matter and Pamela Clare imparted all of this in a compelling, informative and heartbreakingly real way.
Julian Darcangelo is an undercover FBI agent working with the Denver Police Department to help bring down a human trafficking ring. He’s been on this case for many years and now he’s this close **holds up thumb and forefinger to indicate about a quarter of an inch** to finding Alexi Burien, the mastermind behind this heinous operation and who has managed to stay one step ahead of him the entire time. It’s not just a job to Julian, it’s an obsession. It’s his life – what he eats, breathes and lives for, even in his sleep, is finding Burien and putting him out of business, once and for all. Like all the very best heroes across the genres, Julian has a few demons from his past, keeping him from forgiving himself for a mission which went horribly wrong – one he fully blames himself for. Now, as tragic as that sounds, it makes him all the more in need of loving, cuddling and hot sex… oh, sorry, did I say that “hot sex” part out loud? Well, whatever! It’s true, and I volunteer for the job because that’s just the kind of selfless person I am.
    But I digress….
Tessa Novak is the cop reporter for the Denver Independent newspaper’s I -Team, an elite lineup of investigative reporters. Tessa has some secrets of her own, a past that she’s ashamed of, a past none of her coworkers know about. She’s relentless, feisty, and very, very good at what she does and she’s about to have her chance to prove that she’s worthy of a place on the I-Team. While stopping at a local convenience store for her much needed caffeine fix, she becomes an up close and personal witness to a drive by shooting in which a 16 year old girl is the gunman’s target. What Tessa witnessed, a cold, calculated murder has now become her sole focus. She’s determined to find out the whos, whats, whys and wheres of this senseless killing and in doing so gives new meaning to the word tenacious. Her first mission is to find the man in the dark leather jacket, who she saw hiding in the shadows at the scene of the crime.
We’re also treated to revisits with the rest of the I-Team members and their significant others. In one of the cutest scenes in the book, Reece, Julian and Will are up working on the roof at Julian’s house:
Julian looked down from the roof to find five pairs of sunglasses staring up at them, as if painting trim were a women’s spectators sport. “Are they always like this?”
“Yes,” Reece and Will said together, smiling.
Reece pulled his shirt over his head, dropped it to the ground below. “Personally, I enjoy being treated like a sex symbol—especially by my wife.”
“Think of it as an investment.” Will took off his shirt, as well, displaying his football-player physique. “You’ll reap the benefits in the bedroom tonight.”
Julian grinned. “Alright then boys—let’s work it.”
He pulled off his shirt, picked up his bottle of water and drank, letting it spill down his throat and over his bare chest.
From below, he thought he heard Holly groan.
Now, that scene takes place at the end of the book, in the epilogue, after the bad guys are disposed of and life is back to normal. Where many authors just wrap up the story and give us an “and they lived happily ever after,” Ms Clare shows us their happily ever afters which I just love, and is a must for me if a novel is going to earn a 5 star rating. It’s the attention to detail throughout the stories and these special little moments and finishing touches that, for me, make these books stand out above the rest.
The bottom line? What we have with Hard Evidence is an amazing story and unforgettable characters who, with the help of an incredible author, have given us a look into the darker side of humanity and has done so with such depth, such a compelling sense of duty, that I literally could not put this book down and as soon as I was through, wanted to pick it up and start it all over again. The relationship building between Julian and Tessa was sweet, believable and burning up the pages with steamy hot sex done the Pamela Clare way - sizzling hot! You’ll find yourself on the edge of your seat and you’ll stay there from the first page to the last! This author has romantic suspense down to a fine art and aren’t I just thrilled to have found such an exciting series to feed my addiction of this genre!
